On Thursday, the attempt by the South Carolina legislator to tax money that illegal immigrants send back home was removed from an immigration bill. Opponents of the section said the fee on out-of-country wire transfers would hurt not only businesses but also students and military families.The Charlotte Observer reported a House Judiciary subcommittee voted unanimously to delete that section of the bill. It was the panel's first meeting on the measure the Senate passed last month. The subcommittee took no other action on the bill and will likely meet again in three weeks. Senators added the wire transfer fee to the bill during floor debate - $5 to a transfer of less than $500 and a 1 percent fee on higher amounts. They exempted transfers between banks.
