The Illinois Supreme Court threw out a $10 billion judgment against Philip Morris USA on today.
So now it is legal to sell "light" cigaretts as this does not constitute a fraud. The state Supreme Court ruled in a 4-2 decision that the Federal Trade Commission specifically allowed companies to characterize their cigarettes as "light" and "low tar," so Philip Morris did not improperly mislead customers about the health impacts of its cigarettes.
Great! So if it is allowed by one institution it is allowed generally and health does not matter?
A spokeswoman for Philip Morris said the company was "gratified" by the ruling. I can se that. But what does it mean to consumers? The court missed an opportunity to improve the world's health. The discussion goes there may be an appeal to the federal court ...
Stay healthy!
